Dry Mouth

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth or xerostomia results from an inadequate flow of saliva.  Dry mouth can be caused from various medications, radiation, chemotherapy, stress, hormonal changes and other medical conditions.  If left untreated, dry mouth may lead to oral infections, rampant decay, bad breath (halitosis), difficulty swallowing, difficulty digesting food and other oral health problems including periodontal disease.
Dry mouth also causes dentures to become uncomfortable due to the lack of adherence and creation of raw tissue.  Increasing fluid intake sometimes can help alleviate dry mouth.  The Yonge Eglinton Centre Dental Centre clinic and Dr Perelgut may recommend using artificial saliva to help keep oral tissues moist and to buffer the acids from bacteria et al.  There are other remedies  that can be discussed to help meet individual needs.
